Vincent Massey School is the first school in the Ottawa Carleton School Board District to be recognized under the PEP Excellence in Education program. The school was clearly able to demonstrate that their programs and services are focused on their Mission " To maximize student learning through students, staff, parents and community working together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and shared responsibility." The school is lead by Principal Carol Hunter who has personal commitment to quality and has lead her team through the NQI Excellence in Education criteria. The school council reflects the diverse multicultural makeup of the community and students. The school team has a motto that says "Refuse to Lose" which means they will never give up on any of the 730 students and all students will be given the opportunity to succeed. The school has a number of programs in place that make it easy for students to provide input about their needs. Their is a mentor program "Teacher Advisor Program" where students work in smaller groups for a half an hour each day under the direction of a mentor teacher. Their is an early intervention program in partnership with the Ottawa Hospital, their is a multi-cultural Liaison Officer available to help new immigrant students adjust to school expectations. The school has an extended outreach program and works with parent groups, community organizations and various youth organizations. Carol Hunter will be co-presenting with NQI President Dan Corbett at the ASQ Koalaty Kid conference which will be held for the first time in Ottawa in April. Carol and Dan will be speaking on how the Canadian Excellence in Education Program can make a difference to schools through the use of self-assessment processes and references to a criteria that provides clear best practices orientation.
