Making the Multi-Generational Workplace Work!

This sounds easy. In reality, it’s hard and getting harder.

Today’s workplace is different. The mix of race, gender, ethnicity, and age makes for the most diverse workplace that we have seen. With the aging of Canada’s population, most workplaces are recognizing the need to manage ‘age diversity’ or ‘generational diversity’.

Experts on generational issues note that jobs for life and loyalty have been replaced with survival. Employees compete with each other – older worker against younger worker for advancement and security. This can lead to conflict and ultimately lost productivity. Managers who are aware of this age diversity can work to understand this new set of dynamics and create energetic, productive, and positive workplaces, where younger and older employees work together effectively.

There has always been generational conflict (think about your relationship with your parents). What is new and different today is that there are four generations in the workplace and unlike in the past, there is more generational mixing now. The blending of the generations should increase effectiveness because different ideas, opinions, and thoughts are part of the workplace. This may well be true but this cross-generational workplace can also introduce new challenges and conflict. Difference in ambitions, work preferences and expectations, and communication styles are evident.

You have questions….we have some answers….by webinar, courses or coaching.

Healthy Wealthy and Wise
Have a peek inside Amex Canada’s headquarters in Markham, Ontario and you’ll see all the things people normally associate with the term "healthy workplace". There’s a subsidized fitness centre. On-site massage and physiotherapy services. Regular seminars on health, fitness and wellness. A cafeteria that stocks all kinds of healthy foods. Healthy, right? Sure, if a healthy workplace was just about wholesome foods and regular exercise. But at a time when high levels of stress and low levels of morale aren’t hard to find, the definition of "healthy" has started to shift.
