2004 winners to be celebrated at 20th Anniversary Canada Awards for Excellence Gala, Oct. 19 in Toronto
Toronto – The National Quality Institute (NQI) today announced that three Canadian organizations have won Small Business Awards and five others achieved Silver-level recognition under the prestigious Canada Awards for Excellence (CAE) program.
Winners in the Small Business category are:
Strus & Associates Inc. – CAE, Small Business - Silver Level M&M; Meat Shops Ltd. Head Office – CAE, Small Business - Bronze Level Print Audit – CAE, Small Business - Bronze Level
New this year, the CAE Awards for Small Business are the result of collaboration between NQI and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The category was added to recognize excellence in organizations with less than 100 employees, a sector of growing influence on the Canadian economy. Winners must demonstrate that their policies and practices meet a 10-point set of criteria based on the Canadian Framework for Business Excellence.
“As a core part of Canada’s economic engine, these smaller businesses are to be applauded for such outstanding performance,” said Cameron Hyde, Chairman of NQI and Senior Vice President and General Manager, North America Agent Operations, Xerox Corporation. “For these winners, excellence is a way of life and central to the way their operations are managed.” NQI President Dan Corbett added, “Practising a model of performance excellence need not consume vast amounts of time and money; rather, it can help small businesses increase efficiency, reduce costs, build customer satisfaction and retain valuable talent.”
Winners of Silver-level recognition are:
Formation Construction Engineering Maritime Forces Atlantic, Department of National Defence – CAE Quality, Silver recognition Region of Peel – CAE Quality, Silver recognition Calian Technology Ltd. – CAE Quality, Silver recognition R.H. King Academy – CAE Education, Silver recognition Henry Hudson Senior Public School – CAE Education, Silver recognition
“Silver-level winners have assessed their policies and practices against a rigorous set of criteria for achieving business excellence,” said Hyde. “We congratulate them for demonstrating positive early results in key areas of performance.”
These awards mark firsts for a municipality in Canada and a branch of the Department of National Defence. The Education category is also new to the CAE program this year.
“We are especially pleased to see principles of excellence so widely and effectively applied within the public sector,” said Corbett. “These organizations must be as accountable to their stakeholders as private sector companies are to theirs. Among our Silver-level winners are remarkable examples of this performance.”
To receive Silver recognition, organizations must be certified to Level 3 of NQI’s Progressive Excellence Program (NQI-PEP®), a target-driven, incremental approach to applying excellence criteria. Organizations that successfully achieve the highest level, PEP Level 4, are strong candidates for receiving a CAE Gold Trophy or Certificate of Merit.
The following 2004 Gold Trophy winners were announced in August: DaimlerChrysler Canada and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAE Healthy Workplace); Delta Hotels (CAE Healthy Workplace); and Polywheels Manufacturing Ltd. (CAE Quality).
