Elements of a Healthy Workplace
Health Practices
Health Practices is an element
which assesses environments that enable and support healthy
lifestyles, behaviours, and coping skills for dealing with
life in healthy ways, the opportunities employers provide
to support health practices among employees. The resources
listed here will help organizations with a focus on employee
well-being to support skill building and behaviour change
in order to meet employee needs.
Physical Environment
A healthy physical environment
is one that both addresses the health and safety of the
work force and exceeds responsibilities in relation to current
health and safety legislation and directives. Such an environment
is one that fosters and supports a safe and healthy workplace
with policies, programs and activities that reinforce and
provide for good practices. The resources in this category
will assist an organization in a number of ways to achieve
a healthy physical environment.
Psychosocial Environment
The psychosocial environment
is the culture of an organization as experienced by its
employees. Culture is created, reinforced and sustained
by ongoing patterns of human relationships and communications
that are known to have an important influence on mental
and physical health. These resources will help organizations
-through their policies, procedures, design of work, and
focus on basic human needs - to effectively create a positive
social environment that nurtures the ability ofpeople to
fully use their talents and resources and have a satisfying
work life.
